An Interview in Pictures with Nathan Cowen

Nathan Cowen is a graphic designer hailing from Hawaii and living in Berlin. For the past few years he has worked at the well-reputed design agency Hort where his style can be instantly recognised for it’s bold shapes, colours and playful reordering of text. We had the priviledge of working with Nathan on our Summer Don’t Panic for which he provided all of the envelope design and poster layout. Alongside designing things to look generally more appealing, he co-runs the successful found-image blogs Hood-Lum- ”spawned from 90s hip hop historical remembrance”- and the influencial style/ mood blog Haw-Lin with fellow designer Jacob Klein.

As such a talented image collector we requested that Nathan responded to our questions with pictures.

What made you want to become a graphic designer?

Could you select 3 images that sum up Haw-lin?

What’s your favorite font at the moment?

Where do you come from?

What made you move to Berlin?

When searching for images for your blogs, what’s the most absurd thing you’ve come across?

You’ve been working with Hort for the last two years, what’s been your favorite project since being there?

What’s your favorite movie scene?

Can you supply three examples of what you would consider design excellence, one film cover, one magazine cover and one poster.

Finally, what epitomizes bad taste?
