‘Double Feature is a new monthly screening series at THE ZONE. Each month we’ll show two correlating films and feed you free popcorn til you feel sick to your stomach.
For our first evening, two films by Belgian filmmaker Chantal Akerman:
no. 1: SAUTE MA VILLE (Blow Up My Town) – 1968 – 13 min.
A young girl comes back home, shuts herself away in her apartment, goes about her business in a strange way, hums as if she was mad, polishes her shoes and her legs as well, throws her cat out of the window and … kills herself.
no. 2: JEANNE DIELMAN, 23, QUAI DU COMMERCE, 1080 BRUXELLES – 1975 – 201 min.
A singular work in film history, Chantal Akerman’s Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles brilliantly evokes, with meticulous detail and a sense of impending doom, the daily domestic routine of a middle-aged widow—whose chores include making the beds, cooking dinner for her grown son, and turning the occasional trick—just as it begins to break down. In its enormous spareness, Akerman’s film seems simple, but it encompasses an entire world. Whether seen as an exacting character portrait or one of cinema’s most hypnotic and complete depictions of space and time, Jeanne Dielman is an astonishing, compelling movie experiment, one that has been analyzed and argued over for decades.’
