After an extended hiatus, the much loved gallery for photography C/O Berlin reopens for the first time after moving away from its iconic Mitte location in the old post office, at
its latest home at the historic Amerika Haus in old west Berlin. Built under the direction of architect Bruno Grimmek, the Amerika Haus was completed in 1957, and has since served as an American culture and information centre; including a cinema, library and exhibition spaces. Having hosted numerous temporary events at the space, C/O will now become the official sole resident of the space.
C/O on the opening show:
“We have invited many old friends and new companions to the re-opening and will present four exhibitions simultaneously. Hence numerous photographers from the legendary agency Magnum, who also participated when C/O Berlin was founded fourteen years ago, will provide unique insights into their working methods in the exhibition Contact Sheets. Also Will McBride will be in on it. With us for the first time with his early Berlin photos, however not at Amerika Haus for the first time – he was the very first photographer whose works were shown in this location. Another world premiere is Picture Yourself – specially constructed photo booths that take photos in the style of Magnum photographers. After each session you can take your original Magnum portrait with you directly as a print or share it as a digital file via the Internet. With the series Work on Myth by Luise Schröder we will continue with our Talents series as a creative campus for young international contemporary photography and art criticism.”
