Their new album “Dream Seeds” (due May 7th 2012 on Africantape) marks a dramatically new creative direction Extra Life’s still-young but prolific career. It is perhaps their most clearly-defined concept album: seven songs dealing entirely with the twin themes of dreams and children. In a lyrical left turn away from the morbid sexuality and black humor of “Made Flesh”, these songs look to the subconscious in search of innocence, morality and meaning. According to principal songwriter and elementary school teacher Charlie Looker, the lyrics began with a consecutive series of harrowing dreams involving children, all interconnected by recurring symbols. Claiming to be in some way spiritually reborn, Looker penned the songs while mining these dreams’ buried pasts and even watching in awe as some of their prophesies unfolded in all-too-real life. Alternately brutal and tender, haunted by ghosts of both the dead and the unborn, the songs of “Dream Seeds” express the violent yet redemptive collision of the Real and Psychic Worlds and an archaic belief in the divine truth of dreams.

Charlie Looker: vocals, synth, acoustic guitar
Caley Monahon-Ward: electric guitar, synth, electronics, violin, backing vocals
Nick Podgurski: drums, synth, electronics, backing vocals

http://www.africantape.com/

–

Touchy Mob is the plenty-limbed, vulnerable love affair of a hauntingly warm guitar song and the body language of beats, that are meant for a floor. It’s a long-term marriage to the lyrical intensity and comforting darkness of songwriters like Chad VanGaalen, yet with a heavy crush on the riffs of the rave, throwing in found-sound stuff like The Books do, laying a kiss on the kraut history here and there, but in Four Tet marching time. Songs grow on instant glances of admiration instead of continuous influence, scratching along towards punchlines, that can be entirely different in sound yet cohesive in general aesthetic or mood, not a dense mass, but a mass to get lost in.

The Berlin Film Society presents a very special screening of a Chaplin masterpiece. Join us on Friday 25th May for a *themed* Charlie Chaplin film event. In an age where tyrannous dictators still occupy and oppress, Chaplin’s strikingly early political satire (released in 1940 before the U.S.’s official entry into World War II) still resonates as poignantly as ever. With Sacha Baron Cohen’s upcoming release of his own Dictator satire, updated to reflect 21st Century concerns, we thought there would be no better time to return to Chaplin’s most political and controversial comedy.

We want to fill LOFTUS HALL with an audience of Charlie Chaplin ‘Tramps’, so to fit the dress code, here’s what you should wear (there are prizes for the best-dressed Chaplin Tramps!):

: ABOUT THE FILM:

In his controversial masterpiece The Great Dictator, Charlie Chaplin offers both a cutting caricature of Adolf Hitler and a sly tweaking of his own comic persona. Chaplin, in his first pure talkie, brings his sublime physicality to two roles: the cruel yet clownish “Tomainian” dictator and the kindly Jewish barber who is mistaken for him. Featuring Jack Oakie and Paulette Goddard in stellar supporting turns, The Great Dictator, boldly going after the fascist leader before the U.S.’s official entry into World War II, is an audacious amalgam of politics and slapstick that culminates in Chaplin’s famously impassioned speech.
http://www.criterion.com/films/27605-the-great-dictator

: ABOUT THE DIRECTOR/WRITER/ACTOR :

Charlie Chaplin was arguably the greatest comedian of the twentieth century; he is an important historical figure in film, politics, music, and literature. In the history of film, few come close to Chaplin’s skill as a complete auteur. His life and times have been widely documented through a vast amount of biographies, documentaries, radio programmes, films, and more recent mediums, for example the internet.
http://www.debruit.com/

Parisian Synth Magician dÉbruit´s style is a no holds barred sonic assault filtered through dark Congolese sound systems, Downtown L.A. block parties gone wrong, haze filled Kingston recording studios and freaky Tunisian backstreet souks all powered by a fat hip hop engine.

Clark, DE:Bug, Dazed and many more tagged him as one to watch in the near future. XLR8R were early supporters, picked 2 of his tracks in their top 50 of 2008 and recently noted he was their their most downloaded artist with 4 out of the top 10 tracks featuring his trademark synths.

Along with Hip-House alter ego KeeCLAC he’s been remixing Architeq, Zero7, Lee Scratch Perry, Kotchy, Meanest Man Contest, Man Like Me, Konono#1 and more.

dÉbruits productions combine freewheelin synthlines, wobbly loops with Middle Eastern instrumentation, chopped, angular African beats, wild bass and some of the heaviest wonky fusions you will hear all year!.

The night at Festsaal Kreuzberg is gonna be a very special occasion because for the first time in Germany dÉbruit will perform in a live set-up with a band backed by a mindblowing show of hallucinogenic visuals. If you don´t believe us check out the link below!

dÉbruit´s new album will come out in early May on London´s CIVIL MUSIC!

KEEP SHELLY IN ATHENS will finish Kopflos Fest. Their swirling ambient
sound captures that serene feeling you get on a gloomy, rainy day as
your car glides over the slick city streets. With airy beats that are
repetitive, but never trance-like, KSiA is an accessible and
lighthearted entry into the world of down-tempo electronica. As
enigmatic as they are talented, Keep Shelly in Athens is a Greek based
duo that have recently brought on two additional musicians to add to
their live show. Fearing the trend of bands coasting more on their own
hype than their actual talent, KSiA keep their cards close to their
chest, focusing on their music, not their image. If their immediate
sell-out of their last three EPs is any indication, it’s a more than
fair trade-off.

Playing first on May 19 is ANIAETLEPROGRAMMEUR, a Berlin-based band
formed in Paris by Aniajules and Hanrigabriel. They mix heavily
effected guitars and vocals with massive electronic synths and beats,
bridging the gap between rock music, epic composition, psychedelic
electro and soundscapes. Since september 2011, media-artist and
musician Valquire Veljkovic joined the band originaly as a “light
drummer”, bringing a new dimension to their live shows. He lately
tends to be musicaly involved on stage with live drums and keys. The
three of them constantly experiment and develop ways of controling
light gears and devices on stage with triggerring and sequencers
linked to their music devices.

HIGH PLACES who are playing on the first night create danceable pop
music that is both artistic and refined. The consistent dialog between
the duo over the span of three albums is always through rhythmic and
melodic ambient space. The two mix their particular internal rhythms
with a long-standing love of UK and US dance sensibilities such as
that of UK garage, drum and bass, Chicago/NYC house, Detroit techno,
dub reggae, and electro dancehall. The early influence of visceral
live experiences of NYC/Philly hip hop of the late ‘80s and early ‘90s
is evidenced in the band’s massive sound system. With Original Colors,
they are at once pushing forward with much heavier and more complex
beats, but also returning to their more gritty, electro-acoustic
roots.

LUCKY DRAGONS are joining the bill on May 17. Their
concerts-as-workshop style happenings have generated considerable
interest in both the art and music worlds. With a basic set-up of
laptop, homemade electronics and folk instruments the pair creates
equal-power situations in which audience members cooperate amongst
themselves, building up fragile networks held together by such light
things as skin contact, unfamiliar language, temporary logic, the
spirit of celebration, and things that work but you don’t know why. At
the heart of it all is playing together–building up social
collectivities, re-engaging the wonder and impossibility of
technological presence. It sounds–and looks–like simple and ancient
patterns coming together and falling apart in a sincere attempt to let
wires and screens and words become clear and crystal.

If your origins are related to both east and west, if you have experienced three coup-d’états, have experienced three coup-d’états, violence between left and right, gay and minority demonstrations, and secular and Islamic facets for almost 50 years, then inevitably your productivity will include strong political arguments. This approach can be observed in the works of many contemporary artists born in Turkey. In his exhibition iBerlin at Tanas Berlin, Vahap Avşar “explores the underlying patriarchal conditions of socio-political and cultural structures” (press release) with installations, videos and paintings. Although living and working in New York, one may see the strong ties with current political debates in Turkey in Avşar’s work, interpreted with a good dose of humor.

Installation view: Vahap Avşar, iBerlin, 2012 Photographer: Uwe Walter, Copyright: TANAS Berlin

In the film Goodbye Lenin, one of the most remarkable frames is when the sculpture of Lenin flies, representative of a precise moment in history. Sculpture, with its concrete existence, has always been an important tool of power because of its impact on society. Standing at a significant spot in the Tanas space, upside down plinths bearing the head of the artist face each other in 20th Century as We Know It (2011-2012), a piece that deconstructs this image in society, referencing also the emphasis of public sculptures in Turkey, starting with the crucial Modernization period. As with the aforementioned flying Lenin scene, busts of Avşar silently report this new vision, in contrast with the powerful sculptures of the 20th Century of which they are reminiscent.

Vahap Avşar, Shoot Out, 2011, 4-channel video installation, HD , 16:9, synchronized, color, sound, loop, Photographer: Uwe Walter, Copyright: TANAS Berlin

In the video Tekmil (2010), a sweating soldier answers the questions of his commander, frankly visualizing the exercises of the patriarch. Reminiscent of the speech act theory, as the sound and stress of the commander’s voice controls the soldier’s behaviour. The soldier pretends as if nothing is wrong, trying to give the best answers with a machine-like attitude, yet seeing him perspire reminds the viewer of the reality of the situation. Another video with two young men practicing with shotguns depicts the process of practicing cultural codes through different mediums.

The kitsch painting display includes postcards and posters collected by Avşar since childhood, covering one huge wall in the gallery space. These are the images that Avşar grew up with and in regard to cultural codes, one may interpret how visual history may play a more significant role than that of the verbal. His kitsch painting of the Caliph Ali, an important figure for the Alevi minorities in Turkey, hung all alone, has a visual connection with the upside-down pedestals. This spatial communication displays the change in the society by one hung up and the others toppled over. For several years, there have been times that Alevis had the courage to express their beliefs. Avşar’s work, alongside the posters of the Ali that are given out to the visitors, becomes a tribute to them.

Exhibition view: Vahap Avşar, iBerlin, 2012 Photographer: Uwe Walter, Copyright: TANAS Berlin

The strong impact of image and the bounds of cultural codes are well subjectified in the works of Avşar. As it is argued in lots of mediums, public-private spaces, or bodies, are constructed according to the apparatuses of power, but this is something we all know. What separates Avşar’s work is his ironic and direct approach within this context. Once these these images have been observed one by one with their many layered meanings, the dematerialization process can really start in the mind of the beholder.

Vahap Avşar was showing at Tanas Berlin 27/03 – 12/05/2012.

Ivo Gretener’s There’s Only Rumors, Nothing’s Decided,- is now open for visitors at the small but cosy Enblanco Projektraum. Once inside the space one is faced with an object almost as big as the room itself; a caravan. People are gathered around it, lights shine from the windows with curtained domesticity. At the same time there is a feeling that something is not right here, something uncanny… The existence of this large object- the caravan- within such a small art space even makes it hard to move around. Nodes of people may not be generated in the space , raising issues of private-public, space and body. It doesn’t move, although it supposed to, summoning memories of times in one’s life when nothing can be done, with total inertia. And how, in fact, did this get in here anyway? Where is the dust on the caravan coming from? Why are we not able to get in? Which part of the space is “in” and which part is “out”? Who is inside?

Ivo Gretener’s There’s Only Rumors, Nothing’s Decided,-’ will be on show at Enblanco Projektraum until 25.05.2012

If there’s one thing Berlin Film Society seems to succeed at, it’s getting their audience talking about their latest film event. Ranging from British independent cinema to psychedelic cult films, Berlin Film Society offers its audience the chance to experience an exciting range of interesting and imaginative film in different locations around the city. Their recent event was no exception, as Jack Howard and the rest of the team hosted Alejandro Jodorowsky’s controversial film, The Holy Mountain (1973) at KaterHolzig.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with Jodorowsky, the Chilean/French filmmaker, actor and writer is renowned for causing a bit of a stir with his avant-garde films displaying surreal and provocative imagery. The Holy Mountain is no exception to the rule. You can prepare to be firmly pushed out of your comfort zone, because it’s not exactly easy viewing. A scandal when first released, Jodorowsky’s movie is an extravagant, often incoherent satire on consumerism, militarism and the exploitation of developing cultures by the West.

The film starts with a Christ-like figure, representing ‘the thief’ who wanders through bizarre scenarios filled with religious and sacrilegious imagery. He meets an alchemist (played by Jodorowsky) who introduces him to seven wealthy and powerful individuals, each representing a planet in the solar system. The characters are led by the alchemist through several death/rebirth rituals and journey to Lotus Island to gain the secret of immortality from nine immortal masters who live on a holy mountain. However, at the end, we realise the cloaked immortals are in fact dummies and Jodorowsky instructs his group (and the audience) to leave the Holy Mountain where ‘real life awaits us’.

The director’s avid interest in alchemy, the tarot, Zen Buddhism and shamanism is evident in the film, which is itself a surrealist exploration of these spiritual Western traditions. As preparation for the film, Jodorowsky apparently spent three months doing spiritual exercises guided by Oscar Ichazo of the Arica Institute (the Arica training features Zen, Sufi and yoga exercises). He was instructed by Ichazo to take LSD for the purpose of spiritual exploration, which might explain a great deal to viewers. Jodorowsky’s films have often been compared to psychedelics, and The Holy Mountain is without a doubt one extraordinary trip in itself with a crashing comedown at the end, when we realise there is in fact no ‘Holy Mountain’ at all.

KaterHolzig proved to be a fitting location for Jodorowsky’s bizarre and imaginative film. Often comparable to a hedonistic adventure playground for adults, the former Bar25 is brilliant for partying the weekend away. The film event ticket also included entry to the club afterwards (€12 for non-members and €8 for members), making it value for money.

Berlin Film Society aims to engage with its audience and create a whole new approach to experiencing film. For more information on their upcoming events including a Charlie Chaplin film screening and a delicious film experience in conjunction with the Taste Festival, see the website.

Blackbird Blackbird:
Blackbird Blackbird (formerly Bye Bye Blackbird) is the moniker/musical outlet of San Francisco, California wunderkind Mikey Maramag. His reverb-laden musical collages tend to lean towards anthemic, inspirational, and dream-driven themes. Maramag’s influences range from various ends of the musical spectrum. Blackbird Blackbird often tweaks nature-samples and mixes electronic textures with organic instrumentation (guitar, drums, synths, vocal-harmonies). Ghostly female vocals are chopped and screwed, spun around a paint-splattered collage of sound.

No Fear of Pop, Shameless/Limitless and Spoon Train have partnered up to present the Berlin debut of Born Gold. Get excited.

BORN GOLD (CA):
Formerly operating under the moniker GOBBLE GOBBLE, the weird, futuristic pop outfit fronted by pop experimentalist Cecil Frena are tried and tested road warriors. They recently completed an extensive US tour with future pop princess Grimes, where they served as not only the opening act but also Grimes’s backing band.

With their intensive, blown-out guitar peals, eclectic, crunchy synth lines and sparkly 8bit bleep-bloops mixed with outbursts of digital noise, Born Gold is a definite recipe for a bubbling dance floor, with live shows that takes the concept of musical performance to a whole new level.

http://www.facebook.com/borngoldofficial
http://soundcloud.com/borngold
–

KUHRYE-OO (CA):
Calvin McElroy aka Kuhrye-oo is not the first Born Gold/Gobble Gobble member to start publishing his own tunes aside from the band; as former member Corin Roddick of Purity Ring blew up on Pitchfork earlier last year, and now recently signed to 4AD. Aside from his work with Born Gold and Grimes, Kuhrye-oo has been a favourite of No Fear Of Pop ever since his deep electronic creations created a small wave of underground buzz through music sites and blogs earlier last year.

http://www.facebook.com/kuhryeoo

We chat to the famous groove-monger about his new album, loving Animal Collective and what colour socks he wears.

You have a surprisingly big presence on stage, most people who start with DJing don’t feel comfortable enough to come out from behind the decks. Do you prefer performing for people’s eyes or ears?

That’s a good question… I prefer ears, but I think in the beginning I realised you have to perform for eyes as well. You can just stand up there and do nothing behind the table but I feel like it’s theatre to a certain extent and you owe a show. If you’re in the audience, you want to see something fun. I’m not saying that’s silly or crazy, but I think for me it was about figuring out how I wanted to be myself on stage as well as what music I wanted to play.

The Headcage EP has its own narrative and clearly isn’t just spare tracks that you couldn’t fit onto Beams. What was the impetus behind the EP?

I get really jealous of other bands when I don’t have new music out. I went to the label and said I have all this new stuff, if we can’t get the album out until point X, let me put something out. And I mean, I’m with the label, so it’s an easy thing. Headcage will be on Beams, but other tracks won’t. It exists in its own Extended Play which is rare these days; you don’t have many EPs anymore. I remember some of the best Beatles singles were just singles, they weren’t even on the album. It’s fun to just give people in-between moments and keep interest.

Was ‘In the Middle’ always intended as a duet with Drums’ Jonny Pierce?

No, I wrote the song and actually had a version where I sang most of it. Then Jonny came over to my studio in Brooklyn and I showed it to him. He said “Ok, let’s try it,” and I took out my vocals and let him do his. He did my verses and then he wrote his own verse. It became this weird mix of him singing my melodies and him doing his own melodies. Then I came in and did backing for his melody at the end. It was a pretty cool combination.

What can you tell us about Beams? How does it compare to Black City?

It’s a turn towards the light I guess. It’s not rainbows and sunshine, but it’s somebody in a darker world dreaming of something a bit brighter. But I dunno, I hate putting words to it, it’s hard to describe.

I’ve noticed that your vocabulary when it comes to describing your songs is actually quite expansive. It’s less vague than most bands. Is that just a product of a decade of explaining your music to people or does that come naturally?

A little bit of both. I wanna try – some people just say “Fuck it, I don’t know what it’s about.” I gave up on that a long time ago, it’s not interesting. But talking about my music isn’t something I do normally. I don’t sit down to dinner with my wife after I make a song and say “Let me tell you about this one”. The only time I really talk about it is when I’m talking with you. I’m at the point where I look at this as a musical therapy, so I try and dissect things. I might not always hit the mark but by exploring lyrics and what things are about, sometimes you do get to an understanding of what a song was about of which you previously had no idea. It’s like, “Wait a minute…”

You get a lot of respect from other musicians, for instance, we did an interview with Death in Vegas in January who happily name-checked you. Which of your peers inspire you?

That’s cool! I guess one of the biggest contemporary bands that I really love is Animal Collective. It’s an easy answer but it’s easy for the right reasons. They are so creative and powerful with what they do. Seeing them live at Primavera really brought that home.

Last year at Primavera you were looking pretty suave in a white suit. My friends and I were interested in what colour socks you wear with it? Maybe a pastel or a fluorescent hue?

Black. I always have the coloured socks at the back of my head, I always think I’m gonna do it. But I never do…

Beams comes out this summer and you can find the Headcage EP here.

Originally published on Don’t Panic UK.

If you have a passion for film and fashion and would have something to contribute apply here before 15th June for a chance to be a part of the event. As an effort to promote emerging talent, the recently opened Berlin concept store for emerging designers Konzept86 will provide the winner with an exhibition space for 6 months. Following the event, the fashion films will be screened across Berlin throughout the duration of Berlin Fashion Week, and on selected websites, providing visibility to the emerging filmmakers and fashion designers presented.
